Ep. 159: The Weeki Wachee Mermaids

The Weeki Wachee Mermaids

I don’t know what it is, but the siren’s call to become a mermaid seems to reach every girl aged 5-8.  A lucky few answer the call and become the mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs.  The Weeki Wachee mermaids are a very talented bunch.  They breathe underwater using only a small oxygen tube, perform intricate plays, and can even eat and drink while submerged.

I sit down with former mermaid Rita King, who give me the details on what it takes to be a part of this unique and elite group.  We also discuss the history of the Mermaid Show, which included abandoned cars, WWII frogmen, and the evolution of the Merman Movement.
